Toronto and Region Conservation Authority’s (TRCA) Humber by Canoe is an annual community event that gives the public a unique opportunity to paddle the Humber River, free of charge and with safety professionals on site.
Humber By Canoe offers family activities, educational programming, and live performances — all to promote the rich cultural and recreational values of the Humber River.
Although we won’t be able to host Humber by Canoe in person this year, during the month of September we will be posting exclusive content right here, curated specifically for Humber by Canoe!
Celebrate the rich natural, cultural, and recreational heritage of the Humber River from the comfort of your home. Watch a blessing performed by and Indigenous Elder, learn about the Humber by Canoe event, view our canoe route, and discover the exciting projects taking place within the Humber watershed this year!

About the Humber River
In 1999, the Humber River was officially designated under the Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) for its significant cultural and recreational values, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), the Humber Heritage Community, and dedicated community members.
The Humber is the only Canadian Heritage River in the GTA, and one of only 40 designated rivers across Canada.
The Humber River has rich human history as a home for Indigenous peoples along its banks, as an ancient transportation route known as the Carrying Place Trail, and as a site for many of Toronto’s post-European settlement homes and industries.
The Carrying Place Trail is one of the oldest established transportation routes in Canada and is the highlight of the Humber’s CHRS designation.
