Spring Safety Message: Exercise Caution Near Waterways

As spring approaches, bringing warmer temperatures, people all over the GTA look forward to getting outdoors. But the milder weather also leads to rain, melting snow, and shifting ice — all of which contribute to higher, faster-flowing water in local rivers, streams, ponds and lakes.

With this in mind, Toronto and Region Conservation is urging residents to stay safe by avoiding the edges of waterways across the region.

Within the TRCA watersheds, soils remain saturated. The banks of streams and rivers may be slippery and unstable — and the extremely cold water temperatures add to the hazard. While these treacherous conditions persist, the wise course is to keep family members and pets safely away from the water’s edge.
