Etobicoke-Mimico Watersheds Coalition

The Etobicoke-Mimico Watersheds Coalition (Coalition) was a volunteer, watershed-wide advisory committee created by Toronto and Region Conservation to protect and regenerate the Etobicoke Creek and Mimico Creek watersheds and help achieve The Living City vision of healthy rivers and shorelines, regional biodiversity, and sustainable communities.

The Coalition was responsible for overseeing the implementation of the 2002 Revitalization Strategy document, Greening Our Watersheds, which laid out a blueprint for restoring the health of the Etobicoke and Mimico creeks watersheds. Reflecting TRCA’s inclusive approach to community empowerment, the Coalition was comprised of volunteer citizens, members of community groups, and municipal representatives from Caledon, Brampton, Mississauga, and Toronto.

Our community engagement model is currently under review and we are not accepting applications at this time.  Please check back to hear about new opportunities.

Project Teams

A number of Project Teams were established as part of the 2010 to 2012 Coalition Term.  These Project Teams are smaller groups made up of Coalition representatives and local community members.  Project Team’s enable work to be done at a local level and engage community members in the improvement of the watershed.

Brampton Etobicoke Creek Project Team

This project team focuses on the area from Etobicoke Creek watershed within the City of Brampton and Spring Creek subwatershed. This project team works closely with TRCA and the City of Brampton staff to implement the Heart Lake Conservation Park Master Plan and recommendations set out in the Etobicoke and Mimico Creeks Watersheds Technical Update.

South Etobicoke Project Team

This project team focuses on the area from the mouth of Etobicoke Creek north to Highway 401, Little Etobicoke Creek Subwatershed and waterfront drainage area. The group works with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority staff and Coalition to implement recommendations set out in the Etobicoke and Mimico Creeks Watersheds Technical Update.

Lower Mimico Project Team

This project team focuses on the area from the mouth of Mimico Creek north to Highway 401. it works with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority staff and the Coalition to implement recommendations set out in the Etobicoke and Mimico Creeks Watersheds Technical Update. The Committee also develops programs to encourage the community to participate in lot level storm water management, backyard and valley lands naturalization and trails appreciation.

Chairs Committee

This committee is made up of the chair, vice-chair of the Coalition, chairs of each project team and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority staff.  The Committee provides leadership and communication between the various other project teams.  It acts as a spokesperson for the Coalition as well as works with staff to set priorities for Coalition meetings.

Policy and Planning Committee

The Policy and Planning team is made up entirely of members from the Etobicoke-Mimico Watersheds Coalition and works with other Toronto and Region Conservation Authority watershed/waterfront groups to review, comment and advocate jurisdiction-wide planning and policy issues related to the protection of TRCA watersheds.

As a Coalition Member, you can:

• Participate in a forum for input in environmental, heritage, recreation, education, and agricultural initiatives;
• Obtain assistance in planning and implementing projects in your community;
• Attendance at natural environment conservation seminars, technical training sessions, and other educational programs; and
• Gain valuable experience working towards positive solutions for your Etobicoke and Mimico Watersheds.
